Objective | NIOZ contract. The objective of the MD144/IODP (Integrated Ocean Drilling Program) cruise was to finish the study of sites in the north Arabian Sea (IODP-549), in the framework of a joint project between the Netherlands, Germany and Pakistan. The Marion-Dufresne was to bring back seismic data collected on the proposed IODP drilling sites, located between Murray reef and the Pakistan margin. Data were also recorded for a British project. Sediment core samples (Calypso) were taken on site 463 of the NIOP (Netherlands Indian Ocean Program), since this had not been successfully completed during the Marion-Dufresne's previous cruise (MD143, Chamak). The main research objectives related to the IODP-549 drilling were to: · study spatial and temporal variability over the oxygen minimum zone in the Indian Ocean and climate change over time scales going from a decade to several million years; · study the interconnections between low latitude and high latitude climates; · investigate the astronomic stationary phase of the monsoon system; · investigate the Indian monsoon during the warm climate conditions of the first half of the Pliocene epoch; and lastly, study relations between tectonics, ocean circulation and the monsoon in India. The following organizations took part: Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research - THE NETHERLANDS, Utrecht University - Faculty of Geosciences - Department of Earth Sciences - UTRECHT-THE NETHERDANDS, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution - Department of Geology and Geophysics - USA, Alfred Wegener Institut for Polar and Marine Research - BREMERHAVEN - GERMANY Bundesanstalt für Geowissenschaften und Rohstoffe - Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources - HANNOVER - GERMANY, HUIS TER HEIDE, NIO (National Institute of Oceanography) - PAKISTAN. |
