Objectif Entre les deux grands systèmes de collision du Zagros (Iran) et de l'Himalaya (Pakistan-Inde), une des plus anciennes croûtes océaniques de l'océan Indien s'enfonce sous les blocs Eurasiatiques. Ce phénomène de subduction des plaques indienne et arabe sous l'Asie a débuté au début du Tertiaire comme en témoigne la formation de l'arc volcanique à la frontière du Pakistan et de l'Afghanistan. D'importants seïsmes historiques, tel celui de 1945, sont à relier à ces mouvements de convergence. Le prisme d'accrétion tectonique du Makran (empilement de chevauchements constitués de sédiments provenant de l'Indus) résulte donc de l'enfoncement des plaques océaniques vers le nord à une vitesse actuelle moyenne de 5 cm/an. Les 2/3 du prisme sont actuellement émergés et peuvent être étudiés à terre, ce qui en fait un exemple unique. Par ailleurs, le front de la déformation, où peuvent être analysés les processus les plus récents, se situe en mer, au large du Pakistan.
