Objective | This cruise took place during the MD 136 / VIGO survey. The CARAUS (CARbone AUStral) program is an Environmental research observatory (ERO) which received the Ministry of Research's label in 2002. CARAUS contains two programs, S.O. OISO (Indian Ocean observation service) whose missions are conducted aboard the Marion-Dufresne vessel and MINERVE conducted aboard l'Astrolabe, which are the IPEV's two research platforms. These programs aim to study the variability over time and space of the oceanic CO2 cycle, the related air-sea exchanges of CO2 in the subtropical, sub Antarctic and southern zones, as well as detecting anthropogenic CO2 in the ocean and analyzing its ten-year trends. All these cruises are scheduled in the corresponding South Indian and Antarctic sector, generally following the repeated trips made by the Marion-Dufresne (inter-island logistics) and l'Astrolabe (Tasmania-Adelie Land). Internationally speaking, especially in terms of knowledge about CO2 air-sea flow on a global scale and anthropogenic CO2 inventories, CARAUS observations complement the measurements taken in other ocean sectors (Pacific, Atlantic, tropical zones) by foreign partners (Australia, Japan, the UK, the US, etc.). The CARAUS_OISO11 survey was part of the MD-136 VIGO mission, gathering several projects: FLOSTRAL-2, CARHOT, BATHYMAY, etc. The related international programs are: WCRP/CLIVAR, IGBP/SOLAS, IGBP/IMBER. The related French programs are: PROOF, PNEDC, PATOM, GDR-GEOGAA. |
