Objective | Biodiversity of the macrophytobenthos and main zoological groups (Sponges, Ascidians, Echinoderms) in lagoon areas and on the outside slopes of coral systems in the Salomon islands. - Biogeography of porifera on the Melanesian arc. Pharmaceutical chemistry: looking for active marine substances in sponges, ascidians and brown seaweed. The related programs are: Pharmaceutical chemistry of natural substances and Redox pharmacophores UMR 152 IRD- Université Paul Sabatier, Biodiversity of tropical marine fauna and flora (IRD-UMR 7138 "Systematics, Adaptation, Evolution"), French development agency: Coral Reef Initiative in the Pacific, "Marine biodiversity" enhancement action. Comments on the cruise's progression: Difficulties upon arrival on site without research authorizations. Four authorizations were needed to work in Salomon Island waters: 1) Authorization from Salomon Islands Foreign Affairs (issued via French Embassy in PNG) - 2) Research Permit issued by the Salomon Islands Ministry of Education (applications made once there) - 3) Authorization from the provinces visited (applications made once there) - 4) Letter of approval from the Department of Fisheries and Marine Resources of Honiara, specifically imposing that a Salmon Islands observer from the fisheries service be present. Applications made to all chiefs of villages bordering on the areas studied, ie, more than 40 negotiations. Chiefs and villagers welcomed aboard the ALIS at each area explored. |
