Objective | The strategy defined in the framework of the REBENT project to monitor coastal benthic biocenoses provided for identification and characterization, for the Breton subtidal pilot area, of habitats in baseline sectors (sector-based approach) and regular, long-term monitoring of the biodiversity of some biocenoses, especially maerl and fine sand, on a given number of sites located around Brittany (station-based approach). There were two distinct parts to the REBENT 4 survey: First part (Mission head: Dominique Hamon): Mapping and characterizing benthic habitats in the bay of Vilaine. By deploying acoustic facilities (sidescan sonar) sediment sampling devices (Shipeck grab) surface morphosedimentary data was acquired in order to better assess possible issues of heterogeneity in the habitat distribution. Biological sampling using the Hamon grab (sieved on round 2 mm mesh) of the different morphosedimentary strata enabled them to be characterized. Second part (Mission head: Jacques Grall): Sampling in autumn of the maerl biocenosis, at a dozen sites located around Brittany. Samples taken using the Smith McIntyre grab, with 3x3 samples per site (sieved on square 1 mm mesh). It should be noted that the mission was hindered by bad conditions at the beginning of the period, meaning that the studies in the bay of Vilaine only really started on 31st October. The related project is REBENT (Benthic network). |
