Objective | PECOS contributes to analyzing, understanding and forecasting the state of coastal fisheries resources of the Bay of Biscay by carrying out a diagnosis of the composition of fisheries populations on a scale of a quarter of a century (from the late 1970s to the first decade of the 21st century). It will take three years of surveys (2004 to 2006) to update the old data in order to integrate annual variations. The retrospective analysis will first have to compare the two states of benthic and demersal resources, then attempt to interpret the modifications according to the available information about the climate and anthropogenic influences, including fisheries characteristics. This action is designed to become part of the program being defined on an "Ecosystem-based approach to fisheries assessment". The 2004 survey will enable a series of targeted scientific fisheries to be made in two coastal sectors: Mor Braz (from the south of Belle Ile to the Vilaine bay) and the Pertuis straits (Breton and Antioche), using similar protocols to those implemented previously. An initial picture of the overall population will be obtained. Related projects are ECOPEC, Ecosystem based approach for fisheries and the Biscay Challenge. |
