Objective The OVIDE 2 cruise was the second in a series of oceanographic surveys to establish an observatory for climatic variability of the subpolar gyre in the North Atlantic Ocean. Hydrological, geochemical and current measurements were made in 119 stations between the southeastern type of Greenland and the Iberian Peninsula. Repeating surveys along this path every two years for a 10 year period, since 2002, will enable the changes in characteristics of water masses to be determined and the low frequency fluctuations of the meridian circulation cell, the heat fluxes towards Europe and tracer transport to be solved.
