Objectif

L'utilisation des données fournies par les capteurs satellitaires de la "couleur de l'océan" prend un essor considérable au sein de la communauté océanographique dite "bio-géochimique". L'information que cette observation procure sur la biomasse phytoplanctonique de l'océan est en effet importante pour les questions liées :
(1) au cycle océanique du carbone (production primaire et flux associés),
(2) au rôle de l'océan dans les changements climatiques (dynamique 2D, assimilation dans les modèles globaux, ect),
(3) à la physique de la couche mélangée océanique (influence sur la déposition verticale de chaleur), et
(4) au suivi des zones côtières et des pêcheries.

Encore faut-il que les mesures réalisées hors de l'atmosphère par des capteurs satellisés soient correctement interprétées. Pour cela, il faut :

  • maintenir une excellente calibration des instruments,
  • utiliser les techniques les meilleures possibles pour extraire le signal utile - le "signal marin" - du signal total qui est mesuré hors atmosphère, et
  • inverser correctement ce signal qui nous informe sur les propriétés optiques des eaux océaniques superficielles.

Le projet BOUSSOLE s'intéresse à ces 3 points.
