Objective | Use of data supplied by "ocean color" satellite sensors is booming within the oceanographic community working in "biogeochemistry". This observation provides information about the phytoplankton biomass in the ocean, which is effectively significant for issues related to (1) the ocean's carbon cycle (primary production and associated fluxes), (2) the ocean's role in climate changes (2D dynamics, integration in global models, etc.), (3) the physics of the mixed oceanic layer (influence on vertical heat deposition), and (4) monitoring of coastal areas and fisheries. However, the measurements taken outside of the atmosphere by satellite-borne sensors must be interpreted correctly. The following requirements are necessary to that end: (1) maintaining excellent calibration of instruments, (2) using the best possible techniques to extract the useful signal (the "sea" signal) from the total signal measured outside of the atmosphere, and (3) correctly invert this signal providing information about the optical properties of ocean surface waters. The BOUSSOLE project deals with these 3 points. |
