Objectif L'objectif de la campagne BIOSOPE (BIogeochemistry & Optics SOuth Pacific Experiment) était d'étudier, durant l'été austral, la variabilité des propriétés bio-logiques, bio-géochimiques et bio-optiques d'une variété de régimes trophiques dans le Pacifique Sud: la zone eutrophe associée au régime d'upwelling le long des côtes Chiliennes; la zone mésotrophe du panache des Iles Marquises qui résulte d'un enrichissement naturel en fer dans les eaux HLNC (High Nutrient Low Chlorophyll) de cette région subéquatoriale; enfin la zone la plus oligotrophe de la planète, au centre du "gyre" du Pacifique Sud. Cette zone est l'une des zones océaniques les moins connues et présente l'intéressante particularité d'être éloignée de toutes sources d'aérosols désertiques. La campagne BIOSOPE reposait principalement sur des observations acquises le long d'un transect de ~8000 km allant des îles Marquises jusqu'au Chili. Le projet BIOSOPE était soutenu par le programme national PROOF (PROcessus biogéochimiques dans l'Océan et Flux). Au niveau international BIOSOPE relèvait des programmes SOLAS (Surface Ocean Lower Atmosphere Study d'IGBP) et IMBER (Integrated Marine Biogeochemistry and Ecosystem Research), et est soutenu par trois agences spatiales dans le cadre de la validation des capteurs couleurs SeaWiFS et MODIS (NASA) et MERIS (ESA / CNES).
