Objective

The survey's objective was to acquire basic knowledge about the natural state of benthic communities present in the two main areas of French mining permits (East and West) in the Pacific Ocean, as well as about the characteristics of their habitat, in order to draw up a baseline state to study the potential impact of possible exploitation of nodules. The approach to assessing this impact involves 1) estimating the restoration rate of the benthic population along the trace of a 26 year old dredge haul, and 2) experimental studies on benthic population dynamics in this zone. This falls under the Nodules Environment project's Baseline state program. Specific geographic boundaries of the survey areas: Eastern zone: North: 14 deg 08N, South: 13 deg 55, West: 130 deg 10W, East: 130 deg 0W West zone: North: 9 deg 35N, South: 9 deg 28N, West: 150 deg 35N, East: 149 deg 57W.
