Objective

Study on the large scale distribution of hydrothermal biodiversity and geodiversity along a latitudinal gradient ranging from 7 deg 24S to 21 deg 33S, analyzing all the faunal components in the population (microbes, protists, parasites, small macrofauna and symbiotic fauna), the fluids and hydrothermal vent chimneys' mineralogical composition. In addition to this main objective, several secondary, more targeted objectives involving fine characterization of physical-chemical conditions of hydrothermal communities and study of symbiotic functioning or the response to thermochemical stress of target species such as the vestimentiferan tubeworm Riftia pachyptila, the bivalve Bathymodiolus thermophilus, Alvinellidae polychaetes or the wandering polychaete Hesiolyra bergi. This falls under the GDR Ecchis project.
