Objective The main objective is to understand the ecology of two target species, anchovy and sardines, by characterizing the environment which is associated with their distribution. The environmental study covered the quality and circulation of water masses, the first trophic levels, zooplankton and the multi-species community of adult fish. The pelagic ecosystem was mainly addressed through a "size structure" approach. The medium-term aim is to understand the mechanisms determining the multi-species community dynamics of fished pelagic species and monitor any effects on the recruitment of a few species. This falls under the DRV/RH "resource variability" project and the PNEC project.
