Objective | The MD 134 / PICABIA (Calypso Images paleoclimatology on the Iberian and African border) cruise has several objectives. Reconstructing the climatic variability over several climate cycles (glacial / interglacial) at different time scales in the North-East Atlantic. Climate trends in the tropical domain linked to wind transport and the upwelling system. Changes in rainfall and collateral discharges of major rivers of Central Africa. Documenting gravitational flow off Portugal linked to seisms like the Lisbon earthquake and determining their cyclical nature. The related programs are IMAGES, PAGES, PNEDC, ECLIPSE; ESF-Euromargin and INTIMATE. The geographical areas crossed were: A1O N E ATLANTIC (40 W LIMIT), C10 EQUATORIAL ATLANTIC(10N-10S), C14 GULF OF GUINEA and C20 S E ATLANTIC(20 W LIMIT). The cruise took place during the following 2 periods: 1) Starting date: 19 July 2003 (leaving Bay of Biscay) Ending date: 26 July 2003 (Las Palmas - Gran Canaria) 2) Starting date: 26 July 2003 (Las Palmas - Gran Canaria), 03 August 2003 (Cotonou - Benin) Ending date: 14/08/2003 (Cape Town - South Africa). |
