Objective | The core sampling cruise's aim is to discover the response of a complete sedimentary system, that of the Channel, to the high climatic variability of the terminal Quaternary period. The objectives consisted in: - studying sediment transfers from the shelf edge towards deep systems by characterizing the various sedimentary figures (interfluves, channels/levees) and by distinguishing between the different input sources (glacial from the British Isles, periglacial from the English Channel or Loire river systems). -reproducing the paleo-environmental conditions of the Bay of Biscay and in particular, try to track back to a period whose environmental conditions are closer to the current ones, ie, about 400,000 years ago. The related programs are Ifremer's margin challenge program, Image, GDR Marge. The cruise took place during the following 3 periods: 1) Starting date: 24 June 2003 (Brest) Ending date: 28 June 2003 (Brest) 2) Starting date: 12 July 2003 (Brest) Ending date: 14 July 2003 (Bordeaux) 3) Starting date: 15 July 2003 (Bordeaux) Ending date: 19 July 2003 (Bay of Biscay outing - end of SEDICAR mission). |
