Objectif Cette campagne pluridisciplinaire a regroupé des études paléo-climatiques et des études de processus colonne d'eau-sédiments. Le rôle de l'océan austral apparaît de plus en plus important dans les changements climatiques des cycles glaciaires-interglaciaires aussi bien que dans les variations climatiques observées pour l'Holocène, dont les derniers 2000 ans. Cette variabilité naturelle doit être mieux connue pour pouvoir discerner, dans les changements observés actuellement, la part due à l'influence humaine, et prévoir l'évolution future du climat. L'océan austral tient une place majeure dans la circulation océanique de surface et profonde, en interaction avec l'étendue de sa banquise, ainsi que dans le cycle du carbone et de la silice. L'objectif de cette campagne était donc de documenter les variations des températures de surface, du couvert de banquise, du cycle du carbone, du cycle de la silice et du flux d'Eau Profonde Antarctique au cours de l'Holocène supérieur (avec une résolution temporelle annuelle à décennale) et au cours du dernier cycle glaciaire-interglaciaire ; ce grâce au capacité de carottage CALYPSO dont est équipé le Marion Dufresne. Les études de processus actuels entrepris au cours de cette mission (flux particulaires dans la colonne d'eau et à l'interface eau-sédiment, assemblages phytoplanctoniques, mesures géochimiques et CTD) serviront notamment à mieux calibrer les outils, températures alcénones, diatomées et Mg/Ca des foraminifères, teneurs en silice biogène, 15Ndiat, 13Cdiat, 30Sidiat, 18Odiat, 230Th/231Pa, utilisés à des fins paléo-océanographiques. Les programmes de rattachement sont les programmes nationaux : PROOF et PNEDC, les programmes internationaux (dont europeens) sont IGBP/IMAGES, PACLIVA, CESOP.
