Objective This cruise replaced the PROFALIS cruise, validated by the OPCB commission. PROFALIS had been cancelled following problems encountered with the deep water hydrological winch. To avoid the total loss of the cruise time, PROFALIS was replaced by SECALIS. This was a preparatory cruise for a research project which should be developed soon. Ocean circulation plays a predominant role in the triggering and unfolding of El Niño. Recent experiments suggest that the presence of New Caledonia modifies the return current from the South Pacific gyre (the South Equatorial Current) and its branching off when it arrives on the Australian coasts. This leads to the presence of a stronger boundary current on North-eastern New Caledonia. SECALIS aimed to sample this boundary current. This falls under the PNEDC project.
