Objective | Mission to characterize the non-living environment in the lagoon surrounding the town of Suva at the end of the warm season. Characterization of physical chemical distribution in the lagoon's waters. Determining the distribution of particulate and dissolved matter concentrations. Measuring water color distribution using a hyperspectral spectroradiometer. The aim is to determine as precisely as possible the function linking the chlorophyll content, turbidity and water color for the widest range of the first two parameters to be applied to multispectrum satellite images. Comments on the cruise's progression: CTD profiles and water samples were taken at a set of 59 stations (Fig. 1) to analyze the physical-chemical characteristics (dissolved and particulate nutrients, chloropigments) and reflectance measurements. During 2 cycles of 25 hours, located at stations S43 and S12, CTD profiles were recorded every half hour and water samples taken hourly in order to analyze the physical-chemical characteristics 3 meters from the surface and from the bottom, providing time-series sampling of the water mass. To refine the function linking reflectance, chlorophyll and turbidity, CTD profiles and hyperspectral radiometric measurements were repeated at some stations (S22, S23, S25, S26, S27, S30, S31, S32, S33, S34, S35, S36, S37, S38, S39, S40, S41, S42, S43) and supplemented by stations S65, S66, S67, S68, S70 located near the river mouth. Additional samples were taken at 26 out of 59 stations to analyze dissolved metals(S01, S03, S05, S06, S10, S13, S15, S17, S19, S21, S24, S26, S28, S29, S34, S36, S38, S40, S41, S42, S44, S52, S54, S55, S57, S58). |
