Objective | The PROGRES cruise's general objective was to study the gravity processes recorded at different time scales from the terminal Quaternary to the Plio-Quaternary, in the western Mediterranean (Balearic basin and its northern edges, the glacis of the Gulf of Lions, the Catalonian margin and Corsica by using geophysical tools of varied resolutions (EM300 mapping, Chirp VHR seismics and HR 6 channel rapid seismic). In a more detailed approach, it aimed to answer four fundamental questions about the Gulf of Lions' sedimentary history: 1-Origin of the "megaturbidity" accumulated at the bottom of the basin over the last glacial maximum 2-Fate downstream and regional representativeness of recent or even current processes of erosion/deposit highlighted in the Gulf of Lions 3-Repetitiveness of gravity events - recurrence over time, 4-Architecture, relative age and acoustic nature of the distal deposits of the turbidite edifices of the Rhone, Valence and Corsica. The related programs are the European EUROSTRATAFORM and GDR Marges (Gulf of Lions worksite |
