Objectif La campagne BIOZAIRE 3 proposée fait partie du programme ZAIANGO-Environnement Profond Golfe de Guinée qui est le volet écologique et environnemental du projet général ZAIANGO développé par l'IFREMER dans le cadre de l'étude des marges ouest-africaines en collaboration avec TotalFinaElf Exploration. L'objectif de ce programme est l'étude des communautés benthiques (diversité et fonctionnement) en relation avec les principales caractéristiques de l'environnement profond sur des sites de la marge Gabon-Angola. La campagne BIOZAIRE 3 fait suite aux campagnes de 2000 et 2001 ZAIANGO OBS-BIOL, ZAIANGO-BIOL 2, BIOZAIRE 1 et BIOZAIRE 2 qui ont été entreprises pour décrire le milieu environnant et les différents systèmes biologiques existants sur cette marge. La campagne BIOZAIRE 3 est une campagne pluridisciplinaire à dominante biologique et chimique qui s'appuie sur les plus récentes données topographiques, sédimentaires et biologiques acquises sur cette zone lors des campagnes précédentes. Elle doit permettre de mieux comprendre la dynamique des apports énergétiques, leurs origines et leurs conséquences sur le développement des organismes benthiques sur 4 sites distincts. Deux sites sont positionnés sur la marge par 1350 m et 4000 m et représentent les stations de référence soumises aux apports pélagiques et aux apports du plateau continental. Le troisième site, par 4000 m de profondeur, est sous l'influence du chenal du Zaïre. Enfin, le quatrième (3000 m) est sous l'action directe d'émission de fluide riche en méthane. Cette campagne a pour but principal : (1) de caractériser les conditions physiques et chimiques du milieu (2) de déterminer l'origine et l'intensité des apports de matière ainsi que leurs variations temporelles (3) de compléter la description des différentes communautés benthiques rencontrées (4) de comprendre les interactions entre les écosystèmes à base détritique et à base chimiosynthétique.
