Objective The proposed BIOZAIRE 3 cruise is part of the ZAIANGO-Guinea gulf deep environment program which is the ecological and environmental strand of the general ZAIANGO project developed by IFREMER in the framework of studying the West African margins in collaboration with TotalFinaElf Exploration. The program's objective is to study the benthic communities (diversity and functioning) related to the main features of the deep environment on the Gabon-Angola margin sites. The BIOZAIRE 3 survey follows those of 2000 and 2001 ZAIANGO OBS-BIOL, ZAIANGO-BIOL 2, BIOZAIRE 1 and BIOZAIRE 2 which were undertaken to describe the surrounding habitat and the various biological systems which exist on this margin. BIOZAIRE 3 is a multidisciplinary survey (with biology and chemistry predominating), which is based on the most recent topological, sedimentary and biological data acquired on this area during the previous cruises. It should provide better understanding of the dynamics of energy inputs, their origins and their consequences on the development of benthic organisms on 4 separate sites. Two sites were located on the margin at depths of 1,350 m and 4,000 m, acting as baseline stations subjected to pelagic inputs and inputs from the continental shelf. The third site, at a depth of 4,000 m, is influenced by the Zaire channel. And the fourth (at 3,000 m) is directly influenced by the emission of methane-rich fluid. The study mainly aims to: (1) characterize the physical and chemical conditions of the environment (2) determine the source and intensity of inputs of matter, as well as their variations over time (3) complete the description of the various benthic communities encountered and (4) understand the interactions detritus-based and chemosynthesis-based ecosystems.
