Objective | OISO (Ocean Indien Service d'Observation) was an INSU-approved observation service formed by 3 IPSL (Institut Pierre Simon Laplace) laboratories: LBCM, LODYC and LSCE. The programme aims to study the variability over time and space of the oceanic CO2 cycle, the related air-sea exchanges of CO2 in the subtropical, subantarctic and southern zones, as well as detecting anthropogenic CO2 in the ocean and analyzing its ten-year trends. All these cruises (2 per year, one in the southern summer, the other in winter) are scheduled in the corresponding Southwest Indian and Antarctic sector, following the repeated trips made by the Marion-Dufresne (inter-island logistics). During the long logistical stopover at Kerguelen, 5 days of observations were scheduled to explore the interannual variability of the CO2 cycle in the southern ocean. Internationally speaking, especially in terms of knowledge about CO2 air-sea flow on a global scale and anthropogenic CO2 inventories, OISO observations complement the measurements taken in other ocean sectors (Pacific, Atlantic, Southeast Indian ocean) by foreign partners (Australia, Japan, UK, USA, etc.). The NIVMER project of S.O. ROSAME (headed by C.Le Provost/ L. Testut, LEGOS/OMP) was associated with both the OISO-8 survey and the CroHydro2 (C.E.A) programme. New tests and MBES soundings were also made during this round trip. Along the trip samples were taken for the DMS/DMSP by the head of the RACEA (LSCE/IFRTP) project at a few stations. Two Carioca buoys (LODYC/IPSL) were released in the subantarctic zone (45 deg S-73 deg E). The related international programmes are: IGBP/JGOFS, WCRP/CLIVAR and IGBP/SOLAS and the national programmes were: PROOF, PNEDC, PATOM and GDR-GEOGAA. |
