Objective Mission to characterize the non-living environment and initial estimates of plankton biomass and activity in the lagoon surrounding the town of Suva at the end of the warm season. Initial estimates of benthic activity. Characterizing physical-chemical distribution in the lagoon's waters. Distribution of bacterial biomass, bacterial production, primary production under constant light (300 microE) and of chloropigments in 3 size classes (total, >2, >10 micron), abundance distribution of picoplankton (flow cytometry), microphytoplankton (inverted microscopy), protists (ciliates, inverted microscopy) and bacterial diversity (T-RFLP). Determining concentrations of dissolved metals. Distribution of radionuclides (210Pb/210Po, 234Th/238U) in particulate matter, zooplankton and faecal pellets from zooplankton, in order to specify the respective importance of geochemical and biological pathways for particulate transfer.
