Objective | Answering the following questions: What environmental conditions are needed for optimal growth of Trichodesmium and other diazotrophic cyanobacteria? This particularly involved determining the respective roles played by iron and phosphorus in Trichodesmium growth and where they came from. What role does Trichodesmium play and what are the biogeochemical consequences in the environment of the development of these organisms? Which phytoplankton communities develop, which food webs are built, which nitrogen, carbon and phosphorus fluxes are established before, during and after a Trichodesmium bloom? Three points were set: 1) Lagoon (21 deg 57, 30'S; 166 deg 45'E) at Ouinne (2 days), 2) Loyaute channel (21 deg 30'S; 167 deg 00'E) at a depth of 2,100m (2 days), 3) Lagoon once again (2 days) and finally, two stations were visited, one at a depth of 40 m in the lagoon, the other outside of the reef at about 1,000 m depth. The related programmes are IRD: DIAPAZON programme coordinated by UR Cyano and the Lodyc, INSU: national PROOF programme. Comments on the cruise's progression: Excellent working conditions on board. Mechanism to trigger closing of rosette bottles broke down and was impossible to repair on board. Manual samples taken with messengers until the end of the cruise. |
