Objective Determining levels of chemical contamination by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons or PAH in sediments and the water column of the coastal area of the Bay of Biscay, two years after the sinking of the Erika. Determining baseline concentrations of PAH for the study are area (samples taken in pre-industrial period before any high anthropogenic contamination). This falls under the national MEDD programme called Monitoring ecological and ecotoxological consequences of the Erika oil spill.
