Objective Previous studies (COCON 1999 and RINBIO 2000 cruises) had highlighted high contamination by chromium, cobalt, nickel and manganese in sediments west of Cap Corse, in the area (15 km of coastline) adjacent to a derelict abestos mining factory at Canari (Northwestern Corsica) and an accumulation of these metals in mussels put on several sites in the area. The CANARI I survey (October 2001) studied the scale and scope of the contamination in the water column and in organisms around the mine. CANARI II continued the impact study of mine discharges on all compartments of the environment. The objective was two-fold: 1 - To study vertical distribution of contaminants in sediments and identify how they are solubilized: i.e., whether through classic dissolution in seawater or through a diagenetic path in buried sediment, with the dissolved elements diffusing through sedimentary interstitial water. 2 - Studying the transfers of asbestos-bearing sediments from the old mine at Canari towards the continental shelf and adjacent canyons, using a towed camera array. This falls under the LIMA programme.
