Objective	EVHOE was a multiannual survey with the following objectives: 1)Building time-series of abundance indices for the main dermersal and benthic species in the Celtic Sea and the Bay of Biscay. 2) Measuring interannual changes in recruitment. 3) Mapping the spatial distributions of the species and their inter-annual variations, as well as looking for the origin of this variability (biotic and/or abiotic parameters, fisheries impact). 4) In the framework of the "Bay of Biscay challenge", the data collected are vital for understanding changes in faunal communities. The standardized daytime bottom trawling cruise covered the following geographic zones: Bay of Biscay, Celtic Sea, Bristol Channel and south of St George's 5) Knowledge of the bathypelagic fauna was improved through night-time midwater trawling above Related programmes are Fisheries assessment, Fisheries ecosystems and FIS.

Summary of measurements

-161 standardized daytime bottom trawl hauls (153 of which were valid), lasting 30 min. after the geometric parameters of the GOV 36/47 trawl were stabilized, in 27 geographical-bathymetric strata, on seabeds
from 15 to 600 meters.
- 7 night-time pelagic trawlings were made over deep seabeds in the Bay of Biscay, at depths of 1,300, 1,000, 500 and 200 m, to collect unknown or poorly known meso- and bathypelagic species.
-161 vertical temperature and salinity profiles taken using the Seabird 19 CTD at the bottom trawl positions. Data were transmitted to CORIOLIS.
- With each trawl haul: determination, weighing and measuring of each species caught; sex determination for main commercial species, and hard organ (otoliths, illicia) samples were taken.
- With each trawl haul: New biological parameters were acquired for various species. The benthos collected was analyzed by LBEM/University of La Rochelle.
-Measurement of the tension on the GOV 36/47 rigging on 38 hauls to improve knowledge about the fishing rig, check the weighing of the groundrope on the bottom while the station was sampled, etc.
-Acquiring data to model the operations of slacking out and turning the trawl (TMSI/TP/Lorient).
-Fish grading machine trials (TMSI/TP/Brest)
-Receiving, using and archiving CATSAT data. Mainly used on board for weather reports and short-term scheduling of studies.
