Objective | Each PIRATA cruise lasts about two weeks. Not only were the ATLAS arrays moored, recovered and/or maintained (after 1 year) on these cruises, but also CTD (0-1000 m) legs and recording of underway current measurements (ADCP) and temperature and surface salinity using a hull-mounted thermosalinograph (T/S) were made. During this cruise, 2 current-measurement moorings launched by Pirata-FR10 in December 2001 were recovered. The data were to be processed in 2003 at Lodyc (Christine Provost/ Annie Kartavtseff). By integrating PIRATA data in numerical atmospheric and ocean circulation models, we should be able to understand and simulate seasonal to interannual variabilities in the tropical Atlantic climatology. This should enable considerable progress to be made in medium-scale climate forecasts over the entire region, especially for rainfall regimes in the Nordeste area of Brazil and in Western Africa. |
