Objective

The purposes of the GMO2-CARNAC survey were to: a) understand the different kind of breaks leading to submarine land-sliding seen in the Western Mediterranean (morphology, geometry, nature of the sediments, type of deformation of the sediments in the vicinity of the breaking point); b) highlight relationships over space and time between the closest (slump/debris-flow) and furthest (turbidites) deposits; c) identify the mechanical properties of the sediments before deformation immediately above the break zone; d) analyze slope stability; e) define methods to process and analyze signals and acoustic data; f) establish the relationships between acoustic and mechanical properties of the sediments; and g) perfect data processing tools. GMO2-CARNAC was carried out in the framework of the COSTA project.
