Objective | This research programme was carried out within the joint framework of the bay of Biscay challenge and the PNEC. The main goal of the TROPHAL I cruise was to map the sediment area of the large mudflat (Grande Vasière) area of the Bay of Biscay, France within a major research programme to estimate the impact of trawling fisheries (nephrops, angler, hake, sole.. .), on benthic (invertebrates and fish) communities. Research dealt with changes in community structures, in terms of number of species and relative abundance, as well as the food web organization. Sediment characteristics had not been investigated since the sixties, when available technologies did not provide accurate descriptions, or cartography or valid geographical locations of observations. The results will also provide very useful knowledge about interactions between the sediment and benthic animal communities. |
