Objectif

Thème scientifique : Etude d'escarpements sismiques sous-marins en Mer de Marmara.
Types de travaux : Etude des escarpements sous-marins en mer de Marmara : Imagerie, microbathymétrie et prélèvements avec le VICTOR 6000.
Pendant les transits et périodes d'entretien du VICTOR: Profils sismiques 3.5 Khz.
Prélèvement de carottes Kullenberg.

L'objectif de la campagne MARMARASCARPS était de caractériser finement la morphologie et la géologie des escarpements sismiques sous-marins images lors de la campagne Marmara du Suroit que nous avions réalisé en 2000. D'après notre interprétation de ces images, ces escarpements devaient porter des traces exceptionnellement bien préservées de ruptures produites lors des séismes passés. Grâce au ROV Victor 6000 (porté par l'Atalante), nous avons pu cartographier en détail les segments les plus importants du système de failles actives qui menace Istanbul. Nous avons découvert et caracterisé plusieurs escarpements qui correspondent clairement à des ruptures sismiques. L'ensemble de ces travaux devraient permettre de reconnaitre et dater ces ruptures sismiques et d'entamer la reconstitution de l'histoire paléo-sismologique des différents segments sous-marins. Il est crucial de pouvoir déterminer l'extension sous mer de la rupture du séisme de 1912, ou si la célèbre séquence de grands tremblements de terre du XVIII siècle (1719, 1754, mai 1766, août 1766) s'est produite par un enchainement de ruptures sur la branche nord de la FNA, traversant entièrement la Mer de Marmara. De telles informations sont cruciales pour tester les scénarios de rupture des séismes attendus.

Le programme de rattachement est le "Programme de Coopération Franco-Turc sur le Risque Sismique dans la région d'Istanbul et de la Mer de Marmara".
