Objective

Scientific theme: Study of submarine seismic scarps in the Marmara Sea. Types of studies: On submarine seismic scarps in the Marmara Sea: Imaging, microbathymetry and samples with VICTOR 6000. During transits and VICTOR maintenance periods: -3.5 kHz sounder profiles. -Kullenberg core sampling. The MARMARASCARPS cruise aimed to finely characterize the morphology and geology subsea seismic scarps imaged during the Marmara survey aboard the Suroit, which we made in 2000. According to our interpretation of these images, the scarps should have exceptionally well preserved traces of breaks made in past quakes. Thanks to the ROV Victor 6000 (carried by l'Atalante) we were able to make detailed maps of the most important segments of the active fault system threatening Istanbul. We discovered and characterized several scarps which clearly correspond to seismic breaks. All these studies should allow these seismic ruptures to be reconnoitered and dated, and reconstruction of the paleoseismological history of the various submarine segments to be begun. It was essential to determine how far the the 1912 break went undersea, or whether the famous series of major earthquakes in the 18th century (1719, 1754, May 1766, August 1766) was produced by a sequence of breaks on the northern branch of the NAF which runs across the entire Marmara Sea. This information will be vital in order to test break scenarios for the expected quakes. This falls under the Franco-Turkish cooperation programme on Seismic risks in the region of Istanbul and the Marmara Sea.
