Objective | OISO (Indian Ocean observation service) is an INSU-labelled observation service that federates 3 laboratories from the IPSL (Pierre Simon Laplace Institute): LPCM, LODYC and LSCE. The programme aimed to study the spatial and temporal variability of the oceanic CO2 cycle and the associated air-sea exchanges in subtropical, sub-Antarctic and austral zones, as well as the detection of CO2 from human activities in the ocean. All cruises (2/year, one during the austral summer and the other during winter) are scheduled in the corresponding South-West Indian and Antarctic sector, by following the regular routes taken by R/V Marion-Dufresne (logistics between islands). In addition, during the long logistics stop at Kerguelen, 5 days of observation were scheduled to explore the Southern Ocean in winter for the first time. Internationally speaking, especially in terms of knowledge about CO2 air-sea fluxes on a global scale and anthropogenic CO2 inventories, OISO observations supplemented the measurements taken in other ocean sectors (Pacific, Atlantic, South-East Indian Ocean) by foreign partners (Australia, Japan, the UK, the US, etc.). In addition to the studies on the ocean CO2 cycle, the OISO-5 cruise added a study on photosynthetic pigment distribution (extending the GebCO project to the OISO zone). The related programmes are: International IGBP/JGOFS, WCRP/CLIVAR, IGBP/SOLAS; national PROOF/FRAISE, PROOF/Couleur de l'Océan (ocean colour), and PROOF/GebCo, PNEDC/CLIVAR-austral and PNEDC/Changement climatique (climate change). |
