Objective | The NODULE-2024 exploration cruise, which took place from the 3rd to the 18th April 2024, is part of Ifremer's 2021-2026 5-year programme of activities on its exploration contract for polymetallic nodules in the Clarion-Clipperton Zone (Pacific Ocean) hold on behalf of France with the International Seabed Authority (ISA). This mission received State's funding from Agence Nationale de la Recherche (ANR) under France 2030 programme with the reference « ANR-22-MAFM-0001 », and was undertaken by Ifremer assisted by two contractors: Ocean Infinity and the Abyssa consortium (Abyssa, Créocéan, BRGM, RSC). Its objectives were to acquire, on a part of the contract area, high-resolution acoustic and photographic data with a deep-sea AUV, associated with box-core sampling of sediments and nodules. These acquisitions will help characterizing more precisely the nodules' distribution and types on the seabed for a better knowledge of the resourcein polymetallic nodules, as well as seafloor geomorphology and benthic habitats. All of these data will complete the geological and biological knowledge base to help defining the environmental baseline in these habitats, and help with the preparation of the planned second exploration mission that will be dedicated to environmental studies. |
