Objective

Our Planet Reviewed is a programme of expeditions targeting the most species-rich and lesser known compartments of marine and non-marine biodiversity (insects, molluscs, crustaceans). Since 2016, the programme has been conducting expeditions on the land, freshwater, coastal marine and coastal deep-sea ecosystems (KANACONO, KANADEEP and KANADEEP 2) of New Caledonia. The marine coastal KOUMAC 2018-2019 expedition is part of this cluster. Its goal is to realize an unprecedentedly thorough inventory of two biodiversity compartments (molluscs, crustaceans) in the coral reef lagoon and barrier reef of Koumac, 25 years after a previous expedition on the same site that had established new sampling standards of the small benthos. The data obtained meet a variety of objectives:

  1. basic research questions in macroecology on the magnitude, richness and species rarity in complex tropical ecosystems.
  2. exploration, discovery and description of new species. The specimens collected - which include digital images of living organisms and tissue samples for sequencing - will be made available to an international network of systematists through the collections of Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle. In turn, such data feed research projects on phylogeny.
  3. management and conservation projects through the creation and banking of new data in national (INPN, Inventaire National du Patrimoine Naturel) and international (GBIF, OBIS) databases.
  4. the promotion of education programmes, thanks to an outreach teaching team within the expedition team itself.

The first part of the KOUMAC expedition has taken place between September 2 and Sept. 29, 2018, involving a shore-based party of 45 persons and small boats. It focusing on targeted sampling by diving and intertidally, and deployed a couple of colonisation devices (ARMS, tangle nets) to be left on the bottom for a year.

The second part took place from 28 October to 24 November 2019 on the same site. It involves a shore-based party of 48 participants from 15 countries. It will deploy bulk sampling techniques for the small macrobenthos, and it will retrieve the colonisation devices (tangle nets, ARMS) deployed in 2018.

This campaign allowed the retrieval of the colonisation devices on the outer slope of the barrier reef of Koumac.
