Objective

WFD is based on a site monitoring. Different subtidal benthic habitats are monitored following a hierarchical sampling protocol. The selected benthic habitats are ecologically important at the scale of the coasts.

Main objectives are :

  • describe medium and long term changes in coastal benthic ecosystems, whether changes are from natural or anthropogenic sources,
  • characterize changes qualitatively (specific composition) and quantitatively (abundances) in order to assess the health of the marine environment,
  • understand these changes considering the relative share of natural and/or anthropogenic variability of local, regional or global origins.
