Objective

This is the second cruise for the United States Office of Naval Research (ONR) Coherent Lagrangian Pathways from the Surface Ocean to Interior (CALYPSO) Departmental Research Initiative.
The 2019 cruise is the second of three CALYPSO cruises. The goals are:

  • Target multiple submesoscale fronts in the western Mediterranean using satellite remote sensing, real-time models and ship-based survey tools.
  • Measure the Eulerian structure of several fronts including
    • The structure of temperature, salinity and horizontal velocity on scales of 1-20 km and depths from 0-200 m
    • The structure of oxygen, chlorophyll, nutrients, optical backscatter and phytoplankton diversity on scales of a few kilometers.
  • Measure surface Lagrangian trajectories spanning the front and infer the surface values of vorticity, divergence and dispersion statistics.
  • Measure many three-dimensional Lagrangian trajectories originating at the surface front and carrying water into the interior.
