Objective

Population connectivity and the degrees of variability of local biodiversity at the regional scale are important parameters in management of ecosystems when they are submitted to an anthropic effect and, thus, to their reasoned exploitation. In the past few years, the hydrothermal ecosystem has been the target of an increasing interest for permits/concessions in preparation for mining (INTERNATIONAL SEABED AUTHORITIES 2007, GWYTHER 2008). This environment therefore is the subject of studies aiming at better knowing the `state zero' of communities endemic of this unstable and fragmented system to appreciate its resilience to perturbation capacity (GLOWKA 2000, VAN DOVER 2011). To date, only few things were known on the degree of exchange of vet species between hydrothermal fields, or between ridge segments, and in particular on their capacity to rapidly colonize new territories or far-away sites. The objective of the ChuBacArc cruise is to better understand the causes of hydrothermal biodiversity partitioning in the West Pacific back-arc bassins at regional scale, whether historical, ecological, or linked to biological constraints specific of each species (life-history traits). The cruise project lays in an approach close to those developed during the Biospeedo cruise (2004) using the Nautile submersible and its operation vessel L'Atalante, as well as the new Grand Fond AUV prototype for the more exploratory sections. More specifically, it aims at estimating the local and regional diversities of deep-sea hydrothermal vent communities in the West Pacific back-arc bassins and to quantifiy the degree of exchange at the level of the different compartments of life (microbes, microeukaryotes, animals). In addition, the recent openinn og the back-arc bassins (between 2 and 5 Mya) and the wide range of dispersion strategies of vent species offer us the possibility to follow the colonization history of the different ridges by this fauna by analyzing the genetic structure of some species complexes such as the large symbiotic gastropods Alviniconcha and Ifremeria, the Bathymodioline bivalves, and the polychaetes Alvinellidae and Polynoidae, the cirripeds, and to estimate the recent migration events between the different communities while evaluating their variance between species. The ChuBacArc cruise will therefore aim at exploring five hydrothermales zones located between 1100 and 3500 m depth in the Manus (zones PacManus, Desmos and North Su), Woodlarck (zone TVG 150), north-Fiji (Ivory Tower, Mussel Valley) and Lau (Tu'i Malila, Kilo Moana), as well as the volcanic zone called Nifonea and located on the Vanuatu island arc. This cruise is pluridisciplinary, associating several disciplines of life sciences (ecology, populations biology, genetics) and of geosciences (fluid and plume geochemistry, high resolution mapping of sites), with an exploratory part on the Woodlark ridge and the Manus basin (Desmos zone), and is split into 4 main axes, the  first dedicated to the mapping and study of hydrothermal vents of the differen back-arc basins, the second to the associated biodiversity, the third to the connectivity between sites and between basin, and the last to the study of specific adaptations of this fauna (e.g. symbiosis). Each axis includes a series of complementary scientific projects and allows their integration in a more complete analysis of vent communities aiming at better understanding their resilience capacity to anthropic threats such  as mining of active (Nautilus company, Manus Basin) or inactive (Futuna porject) hydrothermal deposits.
