Objectif

La Mer de Chine du Sud (MCS), caractérisée par de forts taux de sédimentation, est une région clé pour reconstruire la variabilité paléo-hydrologique à haute résolution temporelle de l'Ouest de l'Océan Pacifique tropical, et évaluer l'impact des variations climatiques du SE de l'Asie (mousson et évènements extrêmes), sur l'érosion et le transfert des sédiments vers les bassins profonds. Cette mission HYDROSED repose sur un projet de recherche axé autour du climat, intégrant une approche multidisciplinaire visant à relever le défi d'améliorer nos connaissances actuelles sur la dynamique des masses d'eau intermédiaires et profondes et la dynamique des sédiments du Nord de la MCS afin : (1) de reconstruire leur variabilité au cours du Quaternaire supérieur, en se focalisant sur la région située au Sud de Taiwan; (2) reconstruire la dynamique passée du transfert des sédiments depuis les rivières taïwanaises à la marge Nord de la MCS en lien avec les changements paléo-environnentaux (paléo-typhons, paléo-moussons, variations du niveau marin, etc.), avec une approche "source to sink"; (3) calibrer et développer de nouveaux outils pour les reconstructions paleocéanographiques et améliorer notre compréhension de la distribution de la composition isotopique du Nd et des concentrations en lanthanides de l'eau de mer de la MCS qui est sous l'influence des forts apports des rivières asiatiques. La mission HydroSed a permis de prélever des interfaces eau-sédiments et des carottes CASQ et Calypso présentant des taux de sédimentation élevés (pouvant atteindre plus de100 cm/ka), localisées le long du trajet de la circulation des courants profonds dans la MCS, et plus particulièrement dans les systèmes de levées des canyons de Gaoping et de Penghu.
