Objective

The South China Sea (SCS), characterized by high sedimentation rates, is a key area to reconstruct high-resolution paleo-hydrological variability in the tropical western Pacific and assess impacts of SE Asian climate variability (monsoon and extreme events) on erosion and sediment transfer to the deep ocean. This proposal is an integrated multidisciplinary climate research project that takes up the challenges of improving present knowledge of the dynamics of intermediate- and deep-water masses as well as of sediments in the Northern SCS to (1) reconstruct their variability during the late Quaternary with a focus on the South area off Taiwan; (2) reconstruct past dynamic of sediment transfer from the Taiwan rivers to the Northern SCS margin associated to palaeoenvironmental changes (paleo-typhoon, paleo-monsoon, sea-level changes,¿) during the late Quaternary with a source-to-sink approach; (3) calibrate and develop proxies for paleoceanographic reconstructions and improve our understanding of Nd isotopic compositions and REE concentrations distributions in seawater of the SCS under the influence of huge discharges from Asian rivers. The HydroSed cruise has permitted to retrieve sediment-water interfaces, CASQ and giant Calypso cores with sedimentation rates as high as 100 cm/kyr and located along the path of the deep-water current in the SCS and more specifically on the levee systems of the Gaoping and Penghu canyons.
