Objective | SOHN-AREA V (Southern Ocean Hydrophone Network at AREA V) is a passive acoustic monitoring program of the vocal activity of baleen whales during 5 years in the Southern Ocean in front of Dumont d'Urville base. This passive acoustic monitoring program is a part of the international research partnership named SORP (Southern Ocean Research Partnership). The hydrophone deployed through SOHN-AREA V will be included in a long term acoustic research program named Southern Ocean Hydrophone Network (SOHN). The SOHN will consist of a network of autonomous underwater acoustic recording stations surrounding the Antarctic continent to examine trends in Southern Ocean blue and fin whale populations (acoustic density, distribution and seasonal presence). Indeed, during the whaling period, these populations were dramatically reduced near the extinction and today, data of their possible recovery are rare and difficult to obtain with classic visual observations. The used of passive acoustic is a good way forward to have a consistent long term monitoring effort at Southern Ocean scale. SOHN include a set of consistent instruments and analytical methods to compare results at different sites around Antarctic. Here SOHN-AREA V will be the deployment of one of this autonomous hydrophone on the seafloor during 5 periods of 12-14 months in a site located between Hobart and Dumont d'Urville. The first deployement was conducted in february 2018 and the recovery is planned to be in January 2019. |
