Objective | The SEDLAB cruise aims at investigating the Neogene drowned isolated platform(s) of the Lansdowne Bank and the northern tip of the Fairway Ridge (New Caledonia EEZ, South-West Pacific) onboard R/V Alis, thanks to multibeam data between 0-1000m water depth, seismic profiles (SPARKER) and sediment/rock samples trough dredging and gravity coring.
This extensive bank is thought to correspond to an ancient rimmed platform today partially drowned. The overall objective is to characterise the morphologies and sedimentary facies of the Lansdowne Bank and his margins, notably regarding the surrounding turbidite slope systems that feed three distinct deepwater basins: the New Caledonia, Lord Howe and Fairway basins. This morphological, faciological and architectural characterization should bring new insights on the platform to basin relationships, notably in terms of sedimentary transfers and processes. Moreover, significant results are anticipated on the timing and different control parameters on the onset, aggradation and drowning of carbonate platforms, as well as on Quaternary climate driven eustatic variations. All these new data, on a remote environment, particularly rich in biodiversity, will perfectly integrate with the objectives of the newly created Natural Park of the Coral Sea. |
