Objective

HADOCC is a passive acoustic monitoring project using an autonomous hydrophone deployed near Crozet Islands to better understand the cetacean depredation on pelagic and demersal longline fisheries (Patagonian toothfish). During the MD211 cruise, one hydrophone has been deployed from the Marion Dufresne to record passively all marine noises (sampled at 32 kHz) until its recovery early 2019. The record analysis will assess the occurrence of killer and sperm whales in the presence or absence of fishing
operations but also other cetacean species in the EEZ of Crozet. This project is part of the research program ORCA DEPRED (PI Christophe Guinet, CEBC), which aims at characterizing the depredation behavior of killer and sperm whales by different and complementary approaches (long-term and short-term acoustic monitoring, experimental fishing lines, tag deployments).
