Objective | The BBWAVES 2017 campaign was a follow-up to the 2015 and 2016 campaigns, to better understand the interactions between waves and currents and the impact of these interactions on ocean mixing and atmospheric boundary layer dynamics. In particular, the effects of strong current gradients on the shape of short waves and their impact on wind stress and other ocean-atmosphere fluxes were studied. Specific objectives were: 1) Validate theoretical and numerical models of short-wave fitting, particularly at small-scale fronts (see, for example, Rascle et al, 2014). 2) Analyse the effect of current gradients on wave breaking statistics, extending previous work (Sutherland et al. 2013). 3) Determine of the impacts of currents on wind stress in relation to wave breaking. 4) Validation of KuROS wave measurement algorithms to be used by CFOSAT, in particular the study of variability within the CFOSAT ground swath. 5) Field-test the Ifremer-developed SKIB buoy. |
