Objective | KANADEEP is part of the expedition program "La Planète Revisitée" (LPR) in New Caledonia and follows the KANACONO campaign carried out in 2016. The KANADEEP campaign belongs to the "Tropical Deep Sea Benthos" (TDSB) program, led by the MNHN and the IRD since the 1980s, which is mobilizing since nearly 40 years an international taxonomist network. For the last past forty years, the deep-sea floor of the New Caledonian EEZ has been explored by the TDSB oceanographic campaigns. The goal of this new project is to complement the gaps identified in this exploration by collecting data in the habitats and geographic areas of the New Caledonia EEZ that remain still unknown. To complement the existing data, KANADEEP has four main objectives: (1) to fill knowledge gaps in the deep-sea biodiversity of the New Caledonia EEZ; (2) to provide new empirical data on the determinants of connectivity at different spatial scales throughout the fragmented set of habitats existing in the New Caledonian EEZ; (3) to provide empirical data enabling the analysis of the evolutionary processes involved in the development of the New Caledonia deep-sea diversity at different time scales; (4) to analyze species-habitat relationships and refine the predictive power of habitat models and their limitations. These objectives require an ambitious sampling strategy, including trawling and dredging operations in areas that were not properly sampled in previous surveys (including the western part of the EEZ and the southern part of the Loyalty Ridge, and the deep basins between the ridges) and the use of the ROV Victor to acquire images and sample from the fringes and slopes of New Caledonian seamounts, still poorly sampled because of the difficulty of accessing these habitats using traditional trawling and dredging gear. The KANADEEP project corresponds to an expedition that will be carried out on two boats: the Alis and the Atalante. The Alis part occurred from the 27/8/2017 to 27/9/2017. The second part on the Atalante should be programmed shortly. The part programmed on the Alis was divided into two parts (legs). This campaign enabled us to complement the exploration of the Chesterfield Plateau. Analyzes carried out by the team show a lack of data for this area and highlight an important bias in the estimation of the diversity according to the specialties of the taxonomists present on board. The objective was therefore to complete the exploration while correcting the taxonomic bias by mobilizing teams covering a greater diversity of taxa at sea and on land. The expected results are important in the context of the Coral Sea Marine Park, created in April 2014. The Marine Protected Area (MPA) is as large as the EEZ and represents one of the world's largest MPAs. This project also corresponds to the priorities of the GOPS (Great South Pacific Observatory) and the scientific objectives of the cooperation between Australia and New Caledonia on the scale of the Coral Sea. This project involves, as for the other TDSB and LPR campaigns, our international network of taxonomists who value the material collected during our campaigns. Lastly, in order to disseminate knowledge to the populations of the Northern Province of New Caledonia, an educational animation was organized with the help of the associations SYMBIOSE and the Center d'Initiation à l'Environnement (CIE) that have already been involved in the TDSB program during KANACONO in 2016. This animation was carried out with the voluntary classes of the North Province, during a stopover in Koumac between the two legs, onboard the Alis. |
