Objective | The Bay of Biscay and the Celtic Sea are a major fisheries sector for the French fleets. The economic stakes weighing on this vast zone fully justify making significant efforts to manage the resource and organise fisheries, which involves in-depth knowledge about the biology and dynamics of the stocks fished there. Thus, it is vital to have reliable time series for the parameters needed to assess resources and trends in marine ecosystems. The EVHOE cruises act as an observatory for Bay of Biscay and Celtic Sea resources. Populations are counted in an annual census following a standardised protocol. The EVHOE cruises fall under the Ecosystem based approach to fisheries programme, and their main aim is to: 1) build time series of abundance indicators, which can be used to assess stocks and especially enable annual recruitment of populations to be measured; 2) study the strategies species use to occupy the area over their life cycle. Furthermore, the EVHOE project is a source of information about changes in demersal and benthic resources for Ifremer's scientific challenge entitled: "Understanding the interaction between fisheries resources, environment and human pressure on the regional scale, analysing, understanding and predicting how the system will evolve according to various climate and economic scenarios". |
