Objective The series of PELGAS cruises responds to the need to assess the abundance of small pelagics in the Bay of Biscay, in order to ensure that their fisheries are sustainable. The European Union is cofinancing the PELGAS cruise to ensure that abundance indexes for anchovies and sardines are supplied to the international working groups in charge of assessing these stocks. The second objective of the PELGAS cruises is to monitor the pelagic ecosystem of the Bay of Biscay in springtime. The monitoring aims to provide the scientific elements needed for ecosystem-based management of the Bay's pelagic resources, which are subjected to both natural environmental variations, pressure from fisheries and the climate disturbance caused by human activities. The related project is Ifremer's biological resources and environment programme (RBE), cruise fisheries information system, from the "SIH resources" project's action on observation tools methods, at the Ifremer Ecology and models for fisheries science unit.
