Objective The general objective of the PEACETIME ocean research cruise was to study the fundamental processes, and their interactions, that are brought into play by atmospheric deposits (especially Saharan dust) at the ocean-atmosphere interface in the Mediterranean, and to highlight the impact these processes have on the pelagic ecosystem's functioning. The map shows the planned leg in light grey and the actual leg in black. The strategy chosen to adapt the transect leg to atmospheric deposit forecasts made it possible for us to "chase" a Saharan event that we could study for 6 days (FAST station) to the south of the Balearic Islands and to the north of Algeria. After station 10, located the farthest east on our leg, we returned to the FAST station for one last "short" station before heading for La Seyne: during the entire leg, we continuously sampled the lower atmosphere and the ocean surface layer. Whenever possible (outside of French and Italian zones, Messina, Spanish territorial waters), we deployed the MVP. The related project is the MISTRALS Mediterranean study site (INSU) and its MERMEX and CHARMEX projects.
