Objective | Operational satellites provide overall coverage of the New Caledonia lagoon. They enable its health status indicators, i.e. chlorophyll concentration, turbidity and CDOM (coloured dissolved organic matter) to be estimated. These indicators differ in the East lagoon due to the maximum impact of mining catchment basins. Measuring the optical properties of New Caledonian lagoon waters makes it possible to validate algorithms used to calculate chlorophyll, turbidity and CDOM, validate biogeochemical coupled models and estimate fluxes of matter between land-lagoon-ocean. The 3rd CALIOPE (CALedonian OPtical properties of the East coast of NEW CALEDONIA) cruise complements the optical measurements taken for the EC2CO TREMOLO project in October 2011 and March 2014. CALIOPE 03 made it possible to measure the impact an exceptional rainfall event in March 2016 had on the colour of the water. The related projects are TREMOLO (INSU EC2CO) and a PhD contract with Aix Marseille University. |
