Objective SOCLIM aims to implement a cutting-edge approach that will qualitatively and quantitatively improve the observation of the SO via pioneering in situ data acquisition. We propose a multi-partners coordinated and collaborative deployment of a network composed of different innovative instrumented platforms. Such a network has never been conceived nor deployed before in the SO and it will be based on: 1) Multi-instrumented profiling floats: advanced versions of bio-optical and biogeochemical profiling floats, the so-called Bio-Argo floats; These floats are now fully operational and have reached a degree of maturity allowing cutting-edge observations to be undertaken in a variety of environments, including the SO; 2) Instrumented moorings: the deployment of an instrumented package in the surface layer of the SO is very challenging; This kind of mooring will be deployed on the Kerguelen plateau in combination with conventional sediment trap mooring. Using these ground-breaking technologies, SOCLIM will provide an unprecedented consistent data set covering a sizeable part of the SO (from S. Africa to Australia and from 40°S to Antarctica) and covering temporal scales ranging from the diel scale to the interannual one. This dataset will contribute to: 1) Improve the quantification of important climate relevant parameters such as air-sea heat fluxes, fresh-water and carbon. 2) Describe and quantify the physical and biogeochemical processes driving the sequestration of carbon. 3) Explore contrasted regions that may foreshadow the future SO in a changing climate. 4) Progress on unresolved issues such as the origin of the bio-optical anomaly of SO waters, or the role of meso/submesoscale dynamics in driving physical, biogeochemical and biological processes. 5) Propose attractive activities to reach out to 'the wider public' and especially to young people.
